From the massive scale of these triumphs of engineering to the tall tales of the lighthouse keepers themselves, Lighthouses: Life on the Rocks aims to illuminate these incredible stories before they slip out of living memory. The UK's last manned lighthouse was converted to automatic operation in November 1998, and this evocative exhibition explores the lives of the last of the lighthouse keepers.
For centuries these iconic beacons of light have protected our seas and this major exhibition features an incredible array of objects, both large and small. A massive four tonne optic, with its dazzling array of prisms and lenses, forms a sculptural centre piece to the exhibition. Life on the Rocks is being supported by Trinity House, the General Lighthouse Authority, who are generously lending a large number of artefacts to the exhibition. The exhibition is seen as complementary to their own heritage centre at the Lizard Lighthouse and visitors to the Maritime Museum will receive 10% off admission to the Lizard Lighthouse Heritage Centre, where they can take a tour of a working lighthouse.
The exhibition is also part funded by a £30,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and a £10,000 grant from the Sir John Fisher Foundation.
Visitors also have the opportunity to step inside the world of the lighthouse keeper, with a reconstruction of a lighthouse’s living quarters, featuring original curved furniture from Godrevy Lighthouse and objects which reflect the life of a lighthouse keeper. Theirs was a life of strict routine and relative isolation and to fill their time, when not tending to the light, these men would write poetry, craft ships in light bulbs or come up with ingenious ways of supplementing their limited supplies, such as kite fishing!
The construction of lighthouses miles out to sea, on rocky outcrops, exposed to the full force of the ocean are rightly considered to be some of the greatest engineering achievements of the Industrial Age. The Bishop Rock Lighthouse, for instance, stands on a rock ledge just 16 metres wide, four miles off the Isles of Scilly. Part of the exhibition features the solid bronze doors from Bishop Rock which, despite being situated 40ft above sea level and weighing over 100kg each, were smashed open by monstrous waves during a storm in 1994, clearly demonstrating the ferocity of our seas.
Life on the Rocks also reveals the little told story of lightvessels and their crews. Lightvessels were ships which acted as lighthouses in places where it was impossible to build one. Spending weeks at a time imprisoned on the constantly churning ocean, out at sea but going nowhere, without an engine for propulsion, life on board a lightvessel was perhaps the most gruelling of all. The exhibition features original lights from the lightvessels and intricately crafted models of these unique ships.
Jenny Wittamore, Assistant Curator at the Maritime Museum says: “From the power of the ocean to powerful emotions, feats of engineering to feats of daring, as an island nation, lighthouses have played a significant role in all our lives. You might think you know about lighthouses, but this exhibition, with interactive displays and hands-on exhibits, shows that there is more to their story than you ever imagined.”

Learn how the Victorians differentiated between yachting and “boat-sailing” and how “boat-sailing” flourished in the second half of the nineteenth century with the rise of the middle classes. Discover how racing dinghies developed from these boats, first appearing in the waters of South Devon around 1890, and how ultimately these led to the dinghy classes we know today.

This stunning new photographic exhibition at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, explores fishing in Cornwall in the days of sail and oar. The turn of the 19th century marked the last days of fishing by sail and oar around the Cornish coast, but this period also coincided with the wider use of photography to record such work.
The exhibition includes snapshots of the various types of boats that were used; the catching, landing, and marketing of the fish; and the different skills necessary to support the industry. Entire village communities were involved, and the joys, sorrows, and wisdom of their inhabitants can be seen in this exhibition of images from the Pentreath Photographic Archives. Fishing in Cornwall in the Days of Sail and Oar opens on 3 March and runs until 30 May.

This stunning new art exhibition features a selection of works from the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA).
The RSMA collects and promotes contemporary British marine painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking. It is widely recognised as being the focal point for much of Britain’s finest marine art.
Founded in 1939, the Society followed other national art bodies and established a Diploma Collection. New members of the Society are obliged to submit one piece of work to the Diploma Collection and today there are over 100 paintings in this collection, providing a rich resource for researchers and lovers of marine art alike.
Milly Newman, Exhibitions Development Manager at the Maritime Museum says: “This collection has been with the Museum for a number of years, but sadly limitations of space have prevented them from going on display – until now! It’s wonderful to be able to give the public the opportunity to view a selection of pieces from the Diploma Collection.”
The Royal Society of Marine Artists Diploma Collection exhibition has now been extended until 28 March 2011.

Join Geoff Wakeham as he recounts the fascinating history of Britain’s most southerly airfield.

This stunning new exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of Falmouth Docks.
Falmouth has been used as a harbour for over 2,000 years and the docks have been an industrial hub since their creation in the mid-19th Century. Through models, film, objects, paintings and stunning photography the exhibition explores their fascinating history, with a special focus on the dock’s heyday in the 1950s.
David Barnicoat, Falmouth’s Senior Pilot and Milly Newman, Exhibitions Development Manager at the Maritime Museum, have been working together over the last few months to create an exhibition that acts as a legacy to what the docks have achieved, not only for itself, but for Falmouth as a whole.
Milly says: “The docks have shaped the history of Falmouth and nearly everyone who lives in or near Falmouth has had their lives touched by them – either directly or by the industries supporting it.
The dock’s history is at the heart of Falmouth and in the heart of our exhibition is a beautiful model showing their scale and impact. It’s a real jewel amongst the many objects we have supporting the exhibition.”
Frank Eva, a retired employee of the docks, says: “Five generations of my family have worked at the docks. My great-grandfather helped build them, I worked in the fitting shop from the 1950s and my son works there today. You could say it’s in our blood. This exhibition not only tells the story of the docks but in some ways tells a part of my family’s and other family’s histories and I’m very proud it’s being celebrated.”
To really do justice to the docks’ story, the Museum has created a new space which allows the exhibition to come alive. Floor to ceiling windows offer you the opportunity to see the hustle and bustle of the docks at work today whilst the new exhibition surrounds you in their history.
The exhibition opens on the 2 December and runs until 30 March 2011.

The years 1880-1920 saw the final days of commercial fishing by sail and the introduction of steam on the fishing grounds. This period of rapid change had a huge effect on the lives of Cornish fishing communities: from everyday family life to religion, education and the influence of the railways. Join author Keith Harris for this illustrated talk, as he explores their stories through a mixture of fact, legend, art and humour.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel is rightly respected as one of the greatest engineers. His role in the transport revolution of the nineteenth century, and above all in the building of the Great Western Railway, left an indelible mark on the British landscape. His achievements have captured the public imagination and his energy and determination to build on a grand scale set him apart.
In this illustrated talk, Tim Bryan tells the story of the engineer and explores his successes and failures, including his early work with his father on the Thames Tunnel, the broad gauge route to the West Country, the Saltash Bridge and the SS Great Eastern.
Tim Bryan spent twenty-one years working as curator at the Great Western Railway Museum and STEAM Museums in Swindon. Since 2003 he has been Head of Collections at the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon in Warwickshire and has written extensively on railways, museums and industrial heritage. His book “Brunel: The Great Engineer” was published by Ian Allan in 1999.
This is a change to the previously advertised talk.
